Miss Texas 2006 to Perform at Pilgrim's Pride Bowl Classic
Mount Pleasant, TX, November 20, 2006 - Miss Texas 2006 Shilah Phillips will sing the national anthem during pre-game at the Pilgrim's Pride Bowl Classic Saturday, December 9 at Mt. Pleasant's Sam Parker Field. Phillips will join the drill and dance teams from Blinn College and Pearl River Community College and the Mt. Pleasant High School Tiger Dolls to celebrate Texas and salute the 60th anniversary of the game's title sponsor, Pilgrim's Pride Corporation.
Ms. Phillips is the first African-American to represent the Lone Star State in the Miss America Pageant. She also is only the second woman in the history of the Miss Texas Pageant to win the title on her first attempt. Representing Frisco (TX) in the pageant, Phillips won the talent competition for her vocal performance of "I Believe in You and Me" and also nabbed the top spot for the interview competition. She received $13,850 in scholarships.
"We are thrilled to have Miss Texas for the Bowl Classic and to help us celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of Pilgrim's Pride," said Dan Emery, vice president of marketing for Pilgrim's Pride. "This event is really about pursuing dreams, whether on the field or in the classroom. Shilah's message of 'never give up' - to stay in school, live a healthy lifestyle and keep your dreams alive - is exactly what we're all about."
Ms. Phillips will also perform at the Pilgrim's Pride Bowl Classic Banquet at the Mount Pleasant Civic Center on Friday, December 8.
"Having Miss Texas here to sing the national anthem is just one highlight of the pre-game and half-time festivities for the Bowl Classic," said Terry Myers, superintendent of Mount Pleasant Independent School District (MPISD) and a member of the Bowl Classic committee. "We will also have the bands from both Blinn College and Pearl River Community College at the game. Both schools are bringing their drill and dance teams, and Pearl River has a color guard that marches with the band. This will be the first time that both schools playing in the Bowl Classic have been able to bring their bands, and we know they'll put on quite a show for the fans."
There are several other surprises scheduled for the day, according to Terry Giddens, principal of Hughes Springs High School and a Bowl Committee member.
"We hope to have skydivers bring in the game ball this year, if it's not too windy," Giddens said. "We have a couple of other things up our sleeves as well that fans won't want to miss."
A tail-gate party will begin at 11 a.m. December 9 featuring the music of "Doctor, Doctor." Pre-game is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m., with kick-off to follow at 1 p.m. pitting top-ranked Blinn College of Brenham, Texas, against second-ranked Pearl River Community College of Poplarville, Mississippi.
Reserved seat tickets for the game are now on sale at the Mt. Pleasant High School Business Office. Reserved seats are $10 for chair-back seats and $8 for the remaining reserved seats.
